I just about had a heart attack, so I can’t imagine how the pedestrian was feeling.
You can’t see on the camera, but the Mazda just barely missed him, and hit a tree. I think I’m gonna send this to the city, I’ve thought there should be better lighting at this crosswalk for a while.

Code browns for everyone. But is everyone okay?

I had to rewind and watch again to see the guy.
We have a crosswalk near me that you’re supposed to hit a button to make the lights flash for traffic. Most people don’t do that and I’m terrified of something like this happening.

Why did he turn? Is there an exit there he was trying to go down? Did he go too far to the right?

Shit... that seems dangerous! it reminds me of a time that a nitwit was crossing Reforma on a blind corner (jaywalking really) and ran 3/4 of the way and then returned to the center without even looking, I had slowed down but I was still doing like 40km/h and honked for him to look at me... I had to swerve to the right, but the pedestrian must’ve thought I wanted to swerve to the left, so he ran to the right, then I swerved to the left and the pedestrian just froze in the middle of the road... I stopped a few yards infront of him and had to turn on my hazards as he crossed the street because everyone in Reforma is doing 80km/h!
I understand pedestrian rights but man, having the right of way doesn’t mean you forgoe logic and checking both ways before crossing!

Holy shit! Glad everyone was ok! You should also send that to some of the car crash channels, DDSTV or MegaDrivingSchool or something.

WTF!? He blatantly jumped the sidewalk and tried to run the pedestrian down! What the hell was that guy on??

Yeah everyone’s okay. The pedestrian was obviously shaken up but unhurt, and the driver was fine as well.

I think he thought he couldn’t stop in time to not hit the pedestrian by the time he saw him, so went for the sidewalk instead, but kept going when the pedestrian went that way too.

Yeah I saw him late, as you can see by my stopping in the middle of the intersection, and I guess the Mazda didn’t see him until he was in the road. I think this one should have a light like that, or at least streetlights on both sides of the crosswalk

Yeah if I was him I wouldn’t have started walking until it looked like the Mazda was stopping, but the Mazda probably should’ve already seen him too. I dunno, I’m still just glad no one’s dead.

That’s my only thought but still.

Me too! one needs to be very careful! as a driver and as a pedestrian!

He was trying to avoid him as near as I could tell, the pedestrian went the same way so he kept turning to get in front of him.

Yeah, it’s not what I would’ve done either.

Holy shit

Yeah, I cut the video right before I said “holy fuck” and got out

What’s the speed limit? The Mazda looks like it was flying. And was this near a college campus? I notice the pedistrian is wearing a backpack.

50 km/h. He was definitely going st a good clip, and it’s a residential area near a main road.

Yeah- I mean I’m not sure how much a steer light would help. After all, there is a street light RIGHT there.
How bad was the Mazda’s damage? Towed? Likely Totaled?

It’s far enough away that it’s still quite hard to see pedestrians in the dark, it’s easier to see him on camera than it was in person. Really I think it could use an overhead pedestrian controlled flashing light, or something similar.
It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought. Popped tire, busted license plate frame, scuffs and scrapes on the bumper. I think the wheel took the brunt of the impact, he was going pretty slow by the time he hit the tree. He drove away with the flat tire, another questionable choice.

I think I might do that, at least to a local guy I follow who always has good stuff

Really poor strategy, trying to avoid him by driving right into the most likely area he’d take refuge in. But given all the “WTF” moments we see in traffic around here every day, you could very well be right about that!
